The Victoria Cross Trust is a charitable organisation that works tirelessly to ensure the memory and graves of every Victoria Cross recipient are remembered and maintained for generations to come.
All income generated by their various appeals and fund raising activities subsidise the upkeep and preservation of Victoria Cross graves, many of which have been forgotten, are unmarked or have fallen into states of disrepair without any living family members to maintain or look after them.
At the very heart of everything done by the Trust is respect for the Servicemen awarded the Victoria Cross and the wishes of their families, the Victoria Cross Trust do not take this responsibility lightly and at all times endeavour to live up to public expectation whilst maintaining an appropriate and dignified approach to their work.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) only takes responsibility for graves of Victoria Cross recipients killed in action during World War 1 and 2. Many more VC's were laid to rest without civic recognition and without continued maintenance of their graves. The Victoria Cross Trust works with the families and relatives of those brave men whose graves fall outside the remit of the CWGC, to provide the same level of care and maintenance to their graves.
The Trust takes steps to ensure that these important sites are restored, maintained and protected for the long term with an 'after care' plan being put into place for each grave that is restored. A team of volunteers is used to tend these graves and keep them clean and tidy. An application for listing is also considered and in some cases the V.C. Trust will take over ownership of the grave.
The Victoria Cross Trust relies solely upon charitable donations from organisations such as Regimental Associations, and the Bristol Branch of the Grenadier Guards Association is proud to support the Trust with its fund raising throughout 2014.
The Bristol Branch will hold several fund raising activities throughout the year, the first of these being the Bristol 10 Kilometre Run on May 11th . This will be undertaken by Branch Member CHRIS MELLOR, who would appreciate any support possible.
This is a tremendous effort by Chris in aid of a very worthy cause.
We need not remind fellow Grenadiers that the last V.C. Awarded was to L/Cpl James Ashworth (grengds) who was sadly killed in Afghanistan on 13th June 2012. James Ashworth's Father, Duane Ashworth is now a Patron and very keen supporter of the Victoria Cross Trust and is delighted that the Bristol Branch of the Grenadier Guards Association is now fund raising on behalf of the Trust.
We appeal to all Branch Members and Associates of the Branch to consider a donation to this very important cause, please dig deep and contribute in what ever way possible. No donation is too small as every penny counts toward the vital work undertaken by the Trust.
