Annual Report published in the Gazette 1979 No 2

PRESIDENT: Colonel D.W. Hargreaves

CHAIRMAN: J. Frost Esq.,.

SECRETARY: J. Roach Esq., 81, Rodborough, Yate. Tel: Chipping Sodbury 317726

MEETINGS: Quarterly meetings at Bristol Omnibus Sports and Social Club, Lawrence Hill, Bristol as notified.

Committee meetings, third Monday of each month at Kingswood and Hanham, Royal British Legion, Kingswood, Bristol.

THIS is my first Secretary's report for the Bristol Branch, having been recently elected upon the resignation of  D. Griffiths who proved to be a worthy secretary for the past six years, and I hope I can follow successfully in his footsteps, however the Branch has a good all round working committee and I feel that my task will be equally shared.

On 3 May 1978 a party of Committee members and some wives attended the Presentation of New Colours ceremony at Buckingham Palace, the day turning out to be a great success with the weather and attendance.

On Sunday 14 May a coach party was able to attend the Regimental Remembrance Sunday which seemed to be the best attended parade for years.

Grenadier Day was well supported from the Branch, on being able to take three coaches of 156 members and friends, plus numerous members in their own transport. We had a complete sell out with the Cider Stall and Ploughman's Lunches, which has become more popular every year. Our many thanks to all who supported us on this day.

Our annual Dinner Dance was held at the Royal Hotel, College Green, Bristol. It was attended by 113 members and friends, our Guest of Honour being Brigadier M.C. Thursby-Pelham, Welsh Guards, former Commandant of the Guards Depot. Representative from the Regiment being Major E.J. Webb-Carter, one of our own Vice-Presidents, who gave a very informative speech on the movements of the Regiment. A presentation was made by Lord Wigram our ex-President to R. Farquharson of a shooting cup for the best shot in the rifle team, another presentation was made by the President to Mrs J Cambridge of a skittle shield for highest average in the year. I would like to thank all members concerned who donated prizes for the draw, and to everyone who made this evening a great success.

The skittle team still continues to prosper and are proving to be something to contend with, we are still looking for more members to enrich the team throughout the year.

Our rifle club has got off the ground very well and seems to have made some impact on its shooting performance at Grenadier Day, under the leadership of B. Barrington.

I would like to thank the Lieutenant Colonel, General Secretary and staff for the help they have given to the Branch in the past year.

Finally, I would like to thank our President, Chairman and Committee for the support they have given me in my first year.
