Annual Report published in the Gazette Issue No 7

PRESIDENT: Captain J.W.H. Buxton

CHAIRMAN: JV Thomas Esq.

MEETINGS: General and Half Yearly at Kingswood and Hanham Royal British Legion, Regent Street, Kingswood, Bristol. As notified. Committee meetings Third Monday of each month except March and August.

1983 has again proved to be a successful year for the Branch, with its many functions being well supported by Branch members and friends.

At the Annual General Meeting in March we were sorry to see our President Colonel DW Hargreaves standing down from office and he Branch would like to thank him for his services during the past six years. Fortunately we found a quick replacement in Captain Joe Buxton, who has been a very active Vice President for many years, and now he has become President of the Branch we wish him with every success in his new office.

Two very momentous occasions took place during the year. Firstly our President's wife gave birth to a son and secondly one of our confirmed bachelor of the Branch, Gordon Pitman, married Mrs Esme Mees, Secretary of the local skittles league. Through this report we would like to pass on our congratulations to Captain and Mrs Buxton and to Gordon and Esme, our best wishes for the future.

Our rifle club continues to progress under the careful guidance of Sgt John Leaker, who with his team did extremely well at Pirbright by coming third to the 1st Battalion and the winners Cheltenham Branch. He would like to see more support from members on the first Saturday of each month, to which you can enjoy a most eventful evening. The Skittles team under the leadership of Tony Lock and John Thomas has had a very successful year, beating some of the top teams in the league. They also would welcome more members to what is an enjoyable family night out.

It is with deep regret that I report the deaths of two of our members, 5180467 WJ Cook and 28812 R Gorton, a founder member of the branch. To the families of these beloved Grenadiers our heartfelt sympathy is extended.

On Friday 21st October 1983, the Branch held its Annual Dinner/Dance at Ashton Court Mansions, Long Ashton, Bristol attended by 67 members and their guests. Our Guest of Honour was Mr Peter Durie, the Chairman of Courage Western, Bristol. Also in attendance was the Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel ATW Duncan MVO., OBE and his good lady, to represent both The Regiment and Association. He gave us a very good account of the Battalion's movements and other items of interest CE Potts OBE. During the evening Lieutenant Colonel presented the Lord Wigram Cup for the best shot in Skittle to Mr Keith Jones our Vice Chairman, and a shield to Mr Peter Jeynes for the highest average score. It was nice to have four Colonels at our top table, but unfortunately Lord and Lady Wigram could not be present due to illness. The evening was a great success for the branch.

I should like to express my thanks to all those members who have supported the Branch functions throughout the year, to the Lieutenant Colonel, the General Secretary and his staff for their valuable assistance, and finally to the Branch President, Chairman and Committee for their worthy back-up.
